HostSlim Review and Interview
Founded in 2008 by CEO Ralph Karseboom, HostSlim provides competitively-priced hosting solutions and colocation services. Even more impressive is its dedication to using 100% renewable energy across the entire company.
Mr Karseboom provided me with some valuable insights into his company and today, I’m going to share with you my findings.
Where It All Began
Mr Karseboom founded HostSlim with the ambitious intention of shaking up the hosting industry. Not being satisfied with the typical pricing structures at the time, Ralph took it upon himself to create a company that provided exceptional hosting services at fair prices. Here’s what he had to say about HostSlim’s beginnings;
“I founded Hostslim in 2008 (12 years ago) and wanted to make a change in the Hosting industry. Back then most services were over-priced and most users were locked into expensive hosting contracts. I wanted to make a difference by offering no-contract-hosting solutions. We have been expanding year-after-year and are now even operating our own Datacenter in The Netherlands”.
A Fast Operation
When it comes to hosting solutions, speed is important. The HostSlim team knows this and ensures you are all set to go as quickly as possible. Mr Karseboom went into great detail regarding the fast operation he’s running:
“We move fast. What I mean with this is that we can get a client up and running the same day. We don’t have 7 layers of management to push a contract through. We make fast decisions to make sure our clients can transition to their new hosting provider as soon as possible.
As you know, in the Hosting industry, clients sometimes need to move their data, hardware or services fast if there’s any uptime issues elsewhere. So I would say our strength is that we have short lines in our support department as well as our sales department that makes the transition for existing and new clients smooth”.
Taking Good Care of Customers
HostSlim serves over 10,000 clients and describes itself as “your partner for everything web”. The hosting company takes customer care very seriously and the people working behind the scenes strive to resolve issues promptly and efficiently.
Mr Karseboom spoke about HostSlim’s customer service;
“We are available for our clients 24×7 for remote hands in our datacenter and other technical support. So I would say our support is top-notch, but you can better ask this to our customers 🙂
We have a 24×7 NOC Phone number and ticket system to make sure our NOC engineers get notified right away when an issue arises”.
Additionally, HostSlim has a live chat function on its website where a team member is ready and waiting to help.
A Green Company
HostSlim works hard to ensure it uses only 100% renewable energy across the entire company. It achieves this by using energy-efficient hardware using direct free air cooling to cool its data centre.
Mr Karseboom explained about the positive impact this environmentally-friendly approach as had;
“It’s been very positive. Not only do we just use green energy, on cold days we don’t have to use a lot of power due to our datacenter being 90 meters in the sky. The air cools our water-cooling-system that causes us to use way less power for air-conditioning/cooling”.
More still, HostSlim regularly plants trees to compensate for the company’s remaining co2 footprint.
HostSlim’s Range of Solutions
HostSlim has four different server options to choose from; Web & Domain hosting, VPS hosting, Dedicated hosting, and Colocation.
Mr Karseboom told me;
“Right now, the fact that we have a tight team that does their utmost best everyday to provide the best hosting experience for our clients, and the fact that we can offer this from our own datacenter in The Netherlands, is just remarkable.
We are selling a lot of Virtual Private Servers and Dedicated Servers in our datacenter. Lately we see a big expansion in Colocation needs in our Datacenter so as you can see, since the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for compute power in Datacenters is expanding and we notice this as well”.
I’m now going to go through each option so you can decide which one may be best for you:
1) Web Hosting Plans
HostSlim offers three affordable web hosting plans, all featuring daily back-ups, DDoS protection, data protection and an SSL certificate. Additionally, all three plans come with unlimited databases, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited email accounts.
The monthly costs of these plans are 0.85 Euros, 3.95 Euros, and 6.95 Euros, respectively. And, furthermore, HostSlim’s web hosting has a 99.9% uptime guarantee!
2) VPS Hosting Plans
VPS hosting, or Virtual Private Server hosting, is intended for more demanding websites and applications than web hosting is. Even though this is true, HostSlim has managed to keep their VPS costs low, while maintaining a powerful hosting experience.
Like HostSlim’s web hosting customers, all VPS customers will benefit from daily back-ups, DDoS protection, data protection and unlimited bandwidth. Here are the details of the three individual VPS plans:
- 1 Intel Xeon Core
- 1024MB RAM
- 100GB SSD
- Price per month – 6.97 Euros
- 2 Intel Xeon Cores
- 4096MB RAM
- 150GB SSD
- Price per month – 14.97 Euros
- 4 Intel Xeon Cores
- 8192MB RAM
- 200GB SSD
- Price per month – 24.97 Euros
3) Dedicated Servers
If you need something more powerful still, HostSlim’s dedicated server plans are available from just 45 Euros per month. Dedicated server plans are as follows:
- The Starter plan – 45 Euros per month – 8GB DDR4 RAM and 500GB RAID-1.
- The Popular plan – 89 Euros per month – 16GB DDR4 RAM and 1TB RAID-1.
- The Premium plan – 129 Euros per month – 32GB DDR4 RAM and 2TB RAID-1.
Each of the dedicated server plans come with both DDoS and data protection, as well as unmetered bandwidth.
As Mr Karseboom explained earlier, HostSlim has experienced and increased demand for colocation services during the Covid-19 pandemic, which I think is interesting.
You can choose from a single server and a half or full cabinet colocation and, although the company can tailor your plan to suit your requirements, it has three set single server plans available on its site. Just like all their other plans, these are named as Starter, Popular and Premium to keep things nice and simple.
The starter plan costs as little as 55 Euros/month, while the popular plan costs 79 Euros/month and the premium costs 129 Euros/month.
Half cabinets are priced from 495 Euros/month and full cabinets are priced from 695 Euros/month.
Once you’ve made your purchase and are all set up, you will have 24/7 access to your servers, as well as DDoS protection and data protection.
An Ever-Expanding Company
Last but not least, I asked Mr Karseboom about HostSlim’s plans for the future.
“We have a lot of plans to expand our product portfolio. I cannot tell you too much about that right now, but we are working on a new product range that will help users strengthen their privacy and data security online, as that’s what’s needed in 2020. Especially with everything that’s going on. We are also planning on building an extra datacenter and more info will follow on this as well, so that might be “breaking news” for you ;-)”
That wraps up my interview with HostSlim’s founder Ralph Karseboom. I’ve been exceptionally impressed with the company’s green energy commitments, its attention to customer care, as well as its low-cost range of services. A truly fantastic company!
